Sep. 10th, 2009 11:45 pmProject Runway can wait until tomorrow. My head's full of this right now. Plus there aren't pictures up on the website yet and I find those really helpful.
Supernatural - "Sympathy for the Devil"
I was really jittery waiting through Project Runway and The Vampire Diaries (which I basically enjoyed) waiting for tonight's episode. I think because I really, really wanted it not to suck and was afraid that somehow it would fail to live up to my expectations or my love of the characters or something.
But the episode really worked for me. There were a couple of things that I was kind of "hrrm" about, but they were outnumbered by the things I was going "yea!" over, so I call it a win.
That in mind, though, let's start with the things that made me go "hrrm."
The first was the way Dean and Sam weren't dealing with what had happened. On the one hand, it just happened so I can imagine there's a certain level of shock there. On the other...I'm not sure what I can say here actually. Perhaps I expected more of an emotional reaction from one or the other of them? But, in putting that down in writing, I'm not entirely sure that would have been more appropriate or believable.
Because Sam really screwed up (understatement), but he thought he was doing what needed to be done at the time. He knows now that he was wrong, but can he justify his past actions to himself because he thought they were right?
::shrug::
And, of course, Dean did come out and say, "I tried to do the non-issue thing and I can't" (I paraphrase). The timing felt a little odd on that one, personally. I think it's really just that there was a lot going on in the episode setting things up for later and some of the emotional progress (for lack of a better word at the moment) was lost by the wayside.
I do feel bad that Sam and Dean are broken, but they've got a season to work on it.
The other thing that I'm kind of "hrrm" about is the fangirl. I have mixed feelings and they're neither predominantly negative or positive, they just are. Because I did think it was hilarious, but I was also a little "omg they went there! did they have to go there?"
However, it did make me laugh. Especially Dean not being what she pictured.
Dean made a face at some point during either that conversation in response to something that I thought was especially funny, but now I can't remember what it was.
Anyway, other than worrying about Bobby dying, that was it.
Of the good, though, oh there were so many things.
- Dean doing things because of "my friend Cas." Like learning about angel repelling. Though when did they draw that on the door? When they first came in? What was Chuck doing up to the point he nailed Sam in the head?
- Castiel coming back with a bang. That was fantastic. (Also, Misha's name in the credits before the list of "guest stars.")
- Bobby and the Impala. Even if it turned out he was possessed. And then Bobby in the hospital being one of those difficult patients. And apologizing to Sam. I was so hoping something was off when he told Sam to cut him out of his life. I was glad to be right, but sorry to see him stab himself.
- The scene between Nick (It was Nick I think) and Lucifer. It got me thinking a lot about the conversations we had about Lucifer as a character during our Paradise Lost discussions in Texts in Context. Mom thinks they should get Michael C. Hall in there to be creepy and crossover-like.
I also enjoyed the scenes with Nick on his own.
- Speaking of Mom, when they got to the whole "Dean is Michael's sword" her first comment was, "You mean like in The DaVinci Code?"
So I asked her, "Does that mean Dean's going to save the world with his penis?"
- I'm not sure this is necessarily "of the good," but it is of the interesting: Dean is Michael's sword. At first I was like, "Wait, what?" But then it kind of grew on me and there is definite potential there. We'll see how the season goes.
- Also interesting, how did Castiel come back from the dead? Who or what brought him back? There was the implication both he and Zacariah at least suspect. And is it the same who or what that moved Dean and Sam out of harms way? And then what is the greater plan if Castiel was brought back and his first act is to show up and get Dean and Sam out of trouble?
What is going on?? Is basically what I want to know.
I really just want to watch that scene again. The look he shot Dean before taking off!
- I really love the way this show is shot.
Oh! And I loved the levels in the motel, especially when Sam told Bobby it was his fault from the lower-level while Bobby and Dean were up a step by the table. I think Sam was on the lower level when he kept trying to Talk to Dean the first time, too.
I'm still kind of taking it all in, but at the moment I think things are looking fairly promising.
As for next week's preview, I've seen a lot of people excited about Jo coming back. I am, too. But I'm especially happy to see Ellen. I really liked her and the glimpse at the whole hunter culture.
And now I'm going to go poke at that Dean/Castiel fic some more. Worked on it a little at the library today and I think I may have figured out where it's going and why, so that's good.

Date: 2009-09-11 07:24 am (UTC)At the end there, Dean's also just been honest about the fact he doesn't think they have any chance. Add that to Bobby's admission, as you point out, it does work for me.
