It's Sandhill Crane migration time! Grandma phoned me to point out just how many are currently occupying our front field. There's at least 700 out there. This isn't particularly new, but some of them were much closer than usual. Looked a bit like a herd of sheep.



They look a lot less like gray blobs when you click on the picture.

They make such a cool noise, too. Though it reminds me a bit of The Birds and a bit of the Screaming Eels in The Princess Bride.

I love the juxtaposition of the cranes and the cows. Oh, nature in central Washington, how I love thee! I love that the cranes are absolutely everywhere.

There's been this huge gathering of crows & ravens & little cormorant-looking things and gulls and more, down south of highway 26, a little east of than stand of trees. it's really something to see when the sun's going down behind the saddles.

I love all of the birds in the air lately. Driving anywhere it's kind of fantastic to see them taking off and landing in great flocks all over the fields.
