Project Runway - 5.04

First off, I was kind of excited to see Apolo Ohno as the guest judge. His father does my aunt and cousin's hair. Goes to their house, styles them, chats. For years. We've been following Apolo since before the Olympics. So it's kind of crazy to see him on things and be like, "That's the guy that EB said did blah blah blah?"

Overall reaction boils down to this: What the hell were they thinking? Because most of those seemed to generally disregard the whole of the challenge. Like they chose to hear what they wanted to hear and then went semi-patriotic without taking into account what type of people their "clients" would be.

I think Michael Kors summed it up best when he said, "It's almost like they heard the challenge in another language."

Don't get me wrong, some of the designs were great. But they didn't really fit what the judges were looking for.

Liked: Joe, Keith, Kelli, Kenley, Korto, Terri

Borderline: Blayne, Daniel, Jennifer, Leanne

Meh: Jerell, Stella, Suede

- Blayne, Blayne, Blayne. What the hell? I am seriously unimpressed with his lack of, well, kind of everything. Possibly I'm just floored by his talking head about the Beatles and how he liked Across the Universe but that was other people singing their songs. Oi. When he didn't know Sgt. Pepper and Tim was all, "Youth," I was sitting there going, "It's okay, Tim! I know Sgt. Pepper! Not everyone that age is ridiculous!"

Then I tried to imagine Tim in his youth. Tim calls himself an "olde farte" in his recap. Aw, Tim. (Which only reminds me of Doctor Who and David Tennant going around the Globe set and being all, "Ye olde bench. Ye olde sound equipment. Ye olde....")

And the tanning. Oh my god, the tanning.

- Daniel is kind of getting on my nerves. He did something specific this episode that bothered me, but now I can't remember what it was.

I thought his model was really cute, but the design completely missed the mark. I did love Michael's little comment that was something about the dress working only if the competition was a drinking one.

- Jennifer's design I liked, but it was in no way appropriate to the challenge. I mean really, what was she thinking? Also, her comment about bring surrealism on the show? I saw none of that. Ever.

- Looking at the picture of Jerell's design on the PR website, all I can think now is cowgirl.

- I liked Joe's design. (Not so much his attitude about the sewing machines, though.) I thought it was interesting that he told Tim he was going for a literal translation of the challenge. I don't think they wanted the contestants to take it any other way, so I thought he did a very nice job.

- I don't remember Keith's all that much, honestly. But I like the picture on the sight. ::shrug::

- Kelli's was very cute, but I like that sort of look. It was one of those that I could see probably working in the opening ceremony. Though looking at the lack of sleeves, I can't help but wonder about how broad some of those women's shoulders are likely to be and how they'd look.

- Kenley's looked purple to me. Cute, but I didn't see it fitting the challenge very closely.

- Korto's was very nice. Not my personal favorite, but very clean and cool looking. I like that in his recap, Tim points out that it would be easily translatable into men's wear.

- The collar on Leanne's was a little too much for me. Not bad, just...eh.

- Stella's just going to do what Stella wants to do. Though she proved that she could compromise with the model challenge. Can't she grow from that a bit more?

- Suede's was boring.

- I wanted Terri to win. It just looked...professional and polished. Another look that would be easily translated into men's wear.

I almost wanted Joe to win, except he was an assface in this ep. Next in line was definitely Terri!

Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer... I have limited sympathy because she just DOESNT GET IT a lot. But I would have preferred Daniel being eliminated, because I thought his was worse from a design perspective. I'm convinced the sheer fact he used blue(purple.) & red saved his ass! :P

I really want Daniel gone! And I think you're right; the blue/purple and red saved him. Because otherwise I liked Jennifer's design a lot more.

Apparently the jewelry she had incorporated on the jacket was designed after the old Nike logo/emblem. A nice detail, but one that just didn't come across on the screen.

yeah... i'm not sure what happened, but everyone missed the mark for me... some things were "interesting," but...

also, can i just say (i'm a bit late, but) Tim saying "holla atcha boy" was the most adorable thing EVER!?!?!

I know! The whole episode I was sitting there scratching my head and wondering what happened. There were things that I liked, but nothing amazing.

It was ADORABLE. But then I think everything Tim does is great.
