Carter, Keller, and McKay?

Next week's episode "Trio" is the one that I've basically been dreading since I saw clips of it in the Q&A videos over at SciFi's website. Last night's preview didn't do much to help.

Judging from what I've seen, we're going to get Rodney the Buffoon to an uncomfortable extent. Half-minute clips are making me squirm, so I don't know how I'll deal with the episode. I don't want to see Rodney try to be the hero and fail and I don't want to see him perve on Carter or Keller. But he's going to slip into that obnoxious, teenage-like behavior that isn't really Rodney anymore. Occasionally, sure, he'll hit on one of the women or his eyes will linger. And that's fine. What bothers me is that in this case? There's at least one moment where it's completely inappropriate to be perving on a teammate because they're down, dirty, and in pain. At least, it looks that way.

And Rodney works with Teyla all of the time. She's an attractive woman, but he never has to stop and comment on it while he's working on saving them all. Could be because she's not Carter and so not his "ideal woman."

It just bothers me. Rodney's not perfect and that's part of why I love him, but he's also grown as a character. He's past a lot of the behavior that we've seen from him previously, so to see the writers resort to that old behavior is annoying. It's like two steps forward, one step back.

Now watch, "Trio" will air and all of this pre-show annoyance will disappear like a puff of smoke. I imagine I'll still squirm and be annoyed, but I'm sure I'm blowing it out of proportion (especially given the fact that it's just a TV show). That doesn't change the fact that it's been bugging me for a while and that we've seen the writers do this over and over.

Now I'm going to go watch Torchwood and be wonderfully distracted.
