SG-1, SGA, and TV Generally
Aug. 28th, 2006 11:02 pmAnd Never Let Her Go was on Lifetime the other day and me, being the dork that I am, stuck around waiting to see if DH would show up. He didn't. But imagine my surprise when Donald from Traders shows up instead. I was left sitting there going, "Was that-?" And now it looks like he's in a few eps of Angela's Eyes. Am I gonna have to check that out too, just to see what Rick Roberts is like in something else?
Also, I should have watched all of Psych on Friday instead of watching a bit and then changing channels. David Nykl was on! Now I'm going to have to go guide surfing to find out when they'll repeat it this week.
Thoughts on SciFi Friday are less than organized or thought out. It was a long-ish weekend. And I just spent two hours raking hay, so I'm allowed some laziness.
SG-1 - "Counterstrike"
I don't have a great deal to say about this episode, partly because I only saw it the once and partly because I was really looking forward to SGA. Also, I had kid distractions.
So randomly:
- Morena Baccarin is really very pretty. But we knew this already. Adria is creepy. It's partly the eyes and partly her ability to use the Force. Seriously, what else would you call that? She's totally Darth Vader in reverse. "Vala, I am your daughter."
- Really liked several of the moments between Daniel and Vala. I know there was one onboard, um, whatever that ship's called, but the one I'm thinking of is the one onboard the Ori ship. Daniel telling her about his wife and how he lost her and just generally knowing something of what she's going through was nice. It was a good moment of them just being together and not bickering, right up there with the moment after Vala's been brought back from being a crispy critter and Daniel just holds her. Also, everyone knows how much I love Claudia Black already. She does comedy so well, but she does serious so beautiful. On Farscape if you wanted to really upset me, all you had to do was make Aeryn tear up and I was pretty much done for.
- The stuff about quoting different people (I can't remember them all) and it really all going back to Landry and Dr. Phil. Loved the bit in the corridor with Landry and Walter where Landry says something and Walter kind of nods intelligently and says someone and Landry's like, "No. Dr. Phil." Of course he watches Dr. Phil. He watches Dr. Phil and looks for tips to talk to his daughter.
What would happen if the Ori ran into Dr. Phil?
- When SG-1 split up, Tris and I both were like, "That's a bad idea." Interesting that Sam was left by herself. On the one hand, she can definitely take care of herself. On the other hand, if she's doing tech stuff, wouldn't it be nice for someone to hang around and watch her back?
- Wonder what the plans are for Daniel? Does it have anything to do with Michael Shanks saying that there was a surprise in-store for Daniel? Something between death and ascension? Hmmm.
- They blew up Dakara. Well that sucks for everybody. Those Jaffa are really bad at waiting for anything.
Um. Other than that I can't think of anything else to say. Really enjoy the interaction between Teal'c and Mitchell. And the interaction between Vala and Adria. Should be interesting to see how this is all going to play out.
SGA - "Common Ground"
I pretty much loved this episode. A whole lot. But there were a couple of things that left me kind of uncomfortable.
Let's get those out of the way, hm?
- Rodney and the mouse. Because it was pointless. And he's not a buffoon and we have seen him on other missions where stress has arguably been higher not react like that. (We have, haven't we? Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure.) We've seen him be perfectly capable and I don't like that depending on the writer/the plot/whatever McKay's either one way or the other.
Now, I guess I could see him being a little more on edge than usual because of the possibility of Wraith and the Genii factor (which given his history with them and Kolya in particular would be reason for a little nervousness by itself) and the fact that Sheppard's not there to guide him. And I will argue that's not even with the slash-goggles on. McKay looks to Sheppard for guidance in things of this sort, all you have to do is watch "The Defiant One" to see that.
Anyway. The mouse thing bothered me. Although I did like the delivery of his last line in that scene about "and a mouse." He sounded both sorry he'd shot a mouse and a little embarrassed (although that's not really the word I'm looking for) that he'd shot a mouse.
- Carson. I spent most of the episode when Carson was in a scene going "What?" When did we go from "He's scared to go through the 'gate" to gun-totting, action-man Carson? I wouldn't be bothered by his constant involvement in off-world and action-y pursuits had we seen some development.
- Sheppard's pointed look at McKay near the end when he says he's glad they finally made it. I'm actually ambivalent about this look. On the one hand, give McKay a break. He did the best he could with the information he had. Also, you didn't see how devastated he looked all the time you were gone. Then there's the fact that a lot gets asked of McKay and a lot of it isn't even really part of his job. It's just that no one does it better.
On the other hand, Sheppard did direct the look right at him, which could mean that Sheppard's belief that his team would come get him had a lot to do with his trust specifically in Rodney. And because he was so very sure they would find him, that means he's got a lot of trust in Rodney's ability.
So, yes, those were the three things that really just sat strangely with me afterward. However, there was a lot that I loved.
Again, randomly:
- Sheppard. All around. And, wow, JF was wonderful.
- The way Kolya caught him.
- Kolya. I'm pretty unspoiled for a lot of this season, so I didn't even know he was going to be back until last week's promo. He's an awesome bad guy.
- The team. Including Elizabeth and Carson. Their various reactions to Sheppard's torture.
- Rodney's rallying of the troops. Hee. Aw, Rodney. (I said above that Claudia Black tearing up will really get me. The same can pretty much be said about DH doing the sickly terrified thing.)
- The Wraith. How it was all worth it for him just to see the night sky again. That part was, for me, the point where they got a lot more complicated. Being used to living out in the middle of nowhere where you can see exactly why it's called the Milky Way and then going to Seattle where it's either overcast or too bright to see that many stars, well, I look forward to coming home and being able to look up and see it all. So I kind of get it.
- Loved Sheppard kicking ass even as an old man.
- "There's a lot you don't know about the Wraith." I hope we get to find out. The life giving thing? Cool. And terrifying. Can you imagine? They could feed of a person and then give them that life back and feed of them again and give it back and again and again to get what they wanted from someone. I wonder if they could do that indefinitely?
- The end! When Sheppard bounced up just fine I flailed and Tris just looked at me and said, "You scare me" and I just said, "I'm sorry but" and then flailed some more. Because I knew he'd be fine, but I didn't know how that would happen.
- Rodney flying the 'jumper. He's capable!
- Ladon looks way different without facial hair.
- Ronon's got a hot new coat.
I'm sure there's other stuff, but I'm feeling lazy. Basically, I loved the episode. Even the stuff that bugged me had stuff that I loved about it. Now what I really want is fanfic.
Next episode! TWO McKAYS! TWO! And two Hewletts! Well, three if you count that it's two McKays.
People other than myself have mentioned sandwiches. I'd just like to point out how Sheppard's a fan of them.
