Made Out of Jam
Jan. 4th, 2006 03:21 pmEnglish - Texts in Context: It looks like this is going to be my heaviest writing class this quarter. We're reading Marlowe's Tamburlaine the Great Part 1, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Should be interesting and hopefully not too hair-pulling. Dr. Bean is, and this is going to seem like a strange adjective but bear with me, kind of adorable in a dorky/nerdy kind of way. Yesterday he just had that kind of enthusiasm that was like, "Yea, Renaissance!"
I left feeling pretty good about school. Because yea school! But boo classes. I like learning stuff, I just hate the deadlines.
Philosophy - Ethics: The professor wants us to call him by his first name. I'm a little weirded out by that, but I'll get over it. He's kind of crazy and spastic and that's a good thing. Dr. Berry is kind of like that and I loved her. We're reading Aristotle, Kant, Mill, and Mensch. Perhaps it won't be as terrible as I thought it might be. Plus, Kasey's in the class, so I've got someone I know around.
English - Mythology: I'm looking forward to this class. I'm more comfortable now with Dr. Cumberland's slightly more relaxed way of teaching. Forgot about the name tags, though. We have to write a myth about our lives (or something like that). I called it! I talked to several people before taking this class and expressed suspicions about her assigning something like that. But now that it has happened, it could actually be quite fun. Kasey's there, too, so again yea with the knowing someone.
Gonna be an interesting quarter. Doing okay on the assignments so far. Just need to finish the response for "The Time of Marlowe" and read chapter two out of Classical Mythology. Woo.

Mom and Dad brought me back to Seattle on Sunday and left me at Kay and Greg's. They were at their cabin until that evening and when they got back, Tris found me in the play/TV room and you know one of the first things he said to me not ten minutes into their return? "Hey, Stargate comes back in January, doesn't it?"
HEE! There may be a wee sci-fi fan on our hands. He *did* get a ton of Star Wars stuff for Christmas. Plus, I asked him what he'd been reading lately and he said he'd just finished a series about Luke Skywalker. This is exciting for me. Potentially, I could sit and watch stuff with him. Not that I don't already, yea Cartoon Network! He could handle SG-1. But not the first ep, with the nudity. He's not seeing that.
Anyway. It's cool.
This weekend I'll try to take a decent picture of Kirby, so that those of you who have expressed an interest in seeing him finally can. :)
I'm saving the newest (Canadian) ep of SGA for this weekend as a pat on the back for getting work down. Writing for OJ will also be worked on as a break once Thursday is behind me.

Date: 2006-01-06 02:47 am (UTC)I think you would enjoy Dr. Bean. He doesn't try overly hard to be funny, he's excited about what he's doing, and he will randomly call on you so there are no long awkward silences. Natasha's had him and liked him. We decided today that he's rather like a cartoon character with his funny mouth and button nose and slightly sticky-out ears. He just gives off good vibes.
Sorry to hear your quarter may not be so great. :(

My new semester starts Monday. Im really looking forward to it. Sadly, partially because I won't be at work as much. But I also want to learn. Yes yes though. A shared hatred of deadlines exists.
It sounds like you are going to be reading some awe-some books. Taberlaine, Paradise Lost and all the philosophy. So much good stuff.
Dude, I really wish I had access to the first season of Stargate. I'd love to try to get into that. If only I could find a video store around here that has it for rent. There aren't many that rent out tv shows. At least not a wide selection of shows anyway. I've never seen Stargate for rent. Crazy buggers!

Date: 2006-01-06 02:44 am (UTC)I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen SG-1 to rent. I think I have. I know they have slightly more obscure sci-fi shows, like Farscape (which I *highly* recommend, btw), to rent at Blockbuster. At the very least, I know you can buy the individual discs for a few of the earlier seasons. You're right, though, there really is a terrible lack of selection for renting TV shows. I think there's probably a whole market ready to be set up for older shows that people aren't neccessarily ready to buy, but maybe would if they could just rent a couple of disks.

Date: 2006-01-11 10:32 pm (UTC)I've seen the single discs for sale previewed on dvd for some shows. I don't think I've seen them for Farscape yet though. I have for Seinfeild, and some of the basic channel comedies. But things are looking up. So many shows to check out. And now I could use a remote to pause time so I could watch one thing after the next after the next without the daily effects such as getting tired and hungry. That would rock my socks.

Date: 2006-01-13 12:43 am (UTC)I know they've got the single DVDs for Farscape. When I first decided to get into the show after hearing about it a lot online, I went out and found just the first disc with the first two shows because I wasn't sure how I was going to like it. It's very handy. (I also *really* recommend Firefly if you haven't seen it already.) And I know *exactly* what you mean about pausing time! My roommate and I are currently trying to (re)watch Farscape from the beginning and between classes and work it's really hard to squeeze it in at all. If only there *was* a remote so we could all pause time and relax and fit in fun things.

Date: 2006-01-18 08:56 am (UTC)Man! I've been all over the place. After reading how you bought the first dvd of Farscape to try it out, I thought it was a spectacular idea and wanted to try it. But no one seems to be selling them used or by themselves. The closest I've come is a Hollywood Video who said they used to have some, but sold them all. [shakes fist]

Date: 2006-01-27 04:40 pm (UTC)Really the movie is like an invite to the show. Or so it felt to me. It gets your attention and asks 'want to see more?' and points you in the direction of 'Firefly'.

Date: 2006-01-06 02:36 am (UTC)What do you mean?
Marlowe was around 1587, Shakespeare around 1600-1602, and Milton was 1667. Where's this 250+? I am confused.
Milton's fun. I've been exposed to Paradise Lost several times now. Don't know how well I can talk about him, but it's always fun to discuss things. :)
And, yes, New Years was great. I've got to see you people more than twice a year.
