This is another one of those, "I was going through my last two notebooks..." situations.
Everyone andthe kitchen sink their mom does an "Arthur finds out about Merlin's abilities" fic, right? I guess this is mine. Or a version of mine. I wanted to poke at something quick and fun and light for a bit. (Dean and Cas are pondering their next move, in other words.)
Arthur, Merlin. G. 260 words. Set during season one, at least after "The Mark of Nimueh." Arthur is smarter than he looks.
Confession, It's Good for the Soul
Arthur is surprised when Merlin barges into his room to stand in front of him, eyes wide as saucers, and announce, “I’m a sorcerer, Arthur.”
It’s not the content of the confession that surprises him; it’s the way Merlin says it, as though Arthur didn’t know.
“Of course you are,” Arthur says, going back to picking at his food.
Merlin just stays where he is. “Didn’t you hear me?” he says. “I said I’m a sorcerer. I do magic.”
Arthur sighs and rolls his eyes, sets his goblet down and speaks very, very slowly. “Yes, Merlin, I know. And every other week you use that magic to save my life.”
Merlin gapes at him. “Wha—But—What?”
“Oh, for heaven’s sake, close your mouth. You don’t need the help looking like an idiot.”
Merlin’s jaw clicks shut. “But how did you know?”
“You’re not as subtle as you think you are, “Arthur answers. “I’ve known since…before the Afanc?”
“What?!”
“I thought you knew.”
“What?”
“I thought you knew I knew but we were pretending I didn’t know.”
Merlin look pale and a little shaky, but with his complexion and stature that’s not entirely new or surprising. “Oh,” he moans, “my head.” He moves to the chair opposite Arthur and sits.
“It’s why I made up that story about you being in love with Gwen. I thought we understood each other.”
Merlin’s forehead hits the table with a dull thunk.
Arthur hopes he didn’t hurt himself. They already have a village idiot and Arthur’s found he quite likes having Merlin around.
