Spies! Because Chaucer Can Bite Me.
When I'm supposed to be working on school work, I tend to retreat into all of those AUs I'm not actually writing. Like the one where Sheppard's a spy, McKay's a Bond girl (except not really), and Beckett's a harrassed doctor friend (so like normal).
As the debris from the explosion settled around them, Rodney pushed the man – what did he say his name was? – off of him and stumbled to his feet. Surveying the mess around them, Rodney turned on him and shouted, “You blew up my lab!”
Sheppard, he remembered now, frowned at him from below before getting to his feet. He had dust and bits of building in his hair. “I saved your ass,” he said, brushing the dust off like it was an everyday occurrence.
That didn’t excuse anything. “Yeah, well, thank you. Couldn’t you have done it without blowing up my lab?!”
“Listen, Doctor,” Sheppard said, suddenly much closer, his face going from frowning assessment of their physical situation to intense annoyance. “You should be grateful. If I hadn’t saved you, you’d be scattered in pieces now.”
Rodney felt the blood drain from his face. “Oh God,” he gulped, his eyes wide.
Sheppard put his hand on Rodney’s shoulder. “You’re okay, right Doc?”
His knees were weak and he could feel his pulse racing, but he wasn’t about to admit that to this man who was obviously not phased at all by buildings exploding behind him. “Yeah, yeah,” he said instead, shrugging Sheppard’s hand off. “I’m better than can be expected. Maybe some cracked ribs. Definitely some bruising. Probably head trauma.” Sheppard started to move away, leading Rodney through the wreckage of his work. Rodney kicked at the rubble as they made their way through it toward a more open area. His research, gone in an instant. His wrist throbbed. It was probably sprained. He hoped it wasn’t broken. “But really how can you expect me to be when someone blew up my lab?”
Sheppard spared a glance over his shoulder to glare at him. “It’s not my fault someone tried to kill you.”
“It’s not the first time.”
“I’m not surprised.”
Rodney frowned. Why was Sheppard cranky? It wasn’t like some rakish – with that hair he was definitely rakish – man had shown up at his place of work and turned the world upside down and inside out. Rodney had lost his work, his research, a good deal of his possessions. He had a right to be upset.
* [Imagine plot like things occurring and John being wounded.]
John looked past Beckett’s arm to where McKay was standing with his arms folded protectively against his chest. His mouth was drawn into a tight frown as he watched Beckett work. “Relax, McKay,” John said in an attempt to draw the other man’s focus away from the doctor’s work. “I’ve had worse.”
“No wonder your judgment’s impaired,” Rodney snapped.
“It’s really not that bad, Rodney,” Beckett interrupted. “Cuts on the head often seem worse than they are.”
Momentarily distracted by whatever Beckett was doing John only caught the tail-end of the look McKay shot Beckett. “What do you know?” he said, sulking into the next room. “You’re a geneticist.”
Beckett heaved a sigh. “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell him, but does he listen?”
John couldn’t help it and grinned up at the doctor. “I wouldn’t say listening was his strong point.”
Beckett grinned down at him. “Aye, that’s the truth.”
There's a part of me that wishes I'd just go for original characters, but these ones are so much fun to play with. I've got several scenes in mind for this, but I am crap at plot. Blah. So now this has become one of my ways of getting through really boring classes.
