Playing Catch-Up
SGA - "Submersion"
I enjoyed it, even if I called most of it. In some ways it was like a less fantastic version of "The Defiant One," which remains one of my hands down favorite episodes. We've got an abandoned Ancient something-or-other, bickering in the 'jumper, scanning for life signs, and surprise 10,000 year old sleeping Wraith that have eaten the rest of the crew. Except this time we're underwater and there's a lot of people running around doing things.
The comparison actually gets to me in a way, because Rodney was convinced that the beginning that there could be no Wraith on the ship because they didn't show up on the scans. Hello, McKay, do you remember Gall and Abrams and what happened there? It was up to Elizabeth to point out that hibernating Wraith don't ping their machines.
But then it turned out that the Wraith hadn't actually been on the station-thing for their scans, making it slightly less annoying.
The other part that reminded me of "The Defiant One" was the ending, with John being confronted by the Wraith and Rodney coming up behind to shoot it. Once again we see Rodney being competent with a weapon. To make myself feel better about all the times he's not a great shot when he obviously can be, I like to think that he's best when something that really matters is on the line. So he doesn't miss in "The Defiant One" because John's in serious danger and he doesn't miss here because, once again, John is in serious danger.
(The rest of the time, when he does miss or is less than competent, is serious danger, too. Just a different kind. I think there are moments when you know you're in danger but you realize that there's more of a chance of you getting out of it. Or something. Haven't completely thought this through.)
Other things:
- Way to not mention Carson at all.
- Rodney so wishes he were Batman.
- Why'd Elizabeth go with? Let's pile all of our important, in-charge people in a tiny puddlejumper and send them to the bottom of the ocean. That way, if anything happens to them, Atlantis is SOL. Good plan!
- "Don't worry, I have an uncanny sense of direction." Sure you do, John. Sure you do.
- John's tiny "sorry." He sounded vaguely like Kermit. Just a little.
- "Well, if you've ever seen The Abyss, pressure can make you nuts."
And later,
WEIR: Maybe you're right. Telya's just experiencing the effects of the pressure.
SHEPPARD: Hopefully not as bad as that guy in The Abyss.
- "Elizabeth, you're with me. Or I'm with you. However you want to put it."
- WEIR: Rodney, what's the status?
McKAY: As far from the quo as it gets.
- "I hate queens."
Yeah, 'cause they basically violate you every time you meet one.
- The whole conversation between the two scientists about calling McKay "McCoy" and how there really is a scientist named Grayson and why didn't McKay hire him?
Poor guy. Hired on accident. And now he's going to die for it.
- "Teyla's spidey sense works for miles."
- I like Coleman. Didn't we see her in "Tao of Rodney"?
- Wow, a whole big scene between Elizabeth and Teyla. Nice.
Also, maybe a little "Yea, Elizabeth/Teyla!" going on. There was earlier when Elizabeth was all concerned and touch-y.
- Okay, so the whole forced kneeling is very intense and Rodney's, "Can you hear me?" and "Is something wrong?" in the background. Plus the music. But Zelenka's slow rise and the look on his face (24:36 approx.)? That’s the bit I really like. Very nicely done. Wonderful reaction.
- RONON: I missed.
SHEPPARD: I noticed that, too.
- Matching pointing! John and Rodney are so in tune.
- SHEPPARD: Just think of it as a walk on the beach. The beach that's about to explode.
McKAY: Is that supposed to make me feel better?
SHEPPARD: No, it's supposed to make you walk faster.
- SHEPPARD: That took too long.
McKAY: Yeah, well, I probably won't be able to disarm the self-destruct in time anyway, so we're really not in a rush.
SHEPPARD: Why don't we find it first and then you can be negative?
- SHEPPARD: Are you saying this thing is salvageable?
McKAY: I have to assess damage to primary systems, but it's not completely out of the question. Of course, you'd probably just go and blow it up or slam it into a hive ship or something and all that work will be for nothing.
SHEPPARD: Tick tick tick.
Oh yeah, Rodney still has issues with John’s willingness to sacrifice himself and worries about him. He just hides it in annoyance at John breaking the things Rodney makes work for him.
- I like quiet, "huh" Rodney. And then annoyed Rodney when John pushes him about the command code.
Maybe later today, if I can get some actual work done, I'll be able to watch last week's episode. That way I'll be all caught up for, omg, the season finale.
